Washing Machine (Washer)
E17

The E17 error code typically signals that there's excessive foam detection. The washing machine has sensed an abnormally high level of suds during a wash cycle.

Thankfully this is a problem you can usually fix on your own by clearing the foam and running some rinse cycles to clear everything. This can happen due to poor-quality detergent or simply overloading your washing machine with too much during a wash cycle.

Possible causes

  • Overuse of detergent:
    • The most common cause is using too much detergent for the load size.
  • Incorrect detergent type:
    • Using a detergent not designed for washing machines, such as hand-washing or dish-washing detergent, can lead to excess foam.
  • Low-temperature wash:
    • Colder water temperatures can sometimes hinder detergent dissolution, potentially causing excess foam.
  • Foamy laundry items:
    • Washing items that have been previously treated with stain removers or cleaning products containing foam-producing agents can trigger the error.
  • Faulty foam sensor (rare):
    • In rare cases, a faulty foam sensor might be sending inaccurate readings.

Troubleshooting the E17 Error Code

  1. Reduce detergent:
    • Use the correct amount of detergent based on your load size and water hardness. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations.
  2. Use appropriate detergent:
    • Ensure you're using a high-efficiency (HE) detergent designed for washing machines.
  3. Run a high-temperature cycle:
    • Try running a wash cycle with hotter water to aid detergent dissolution and reduce foam.
  4. Clear excess foam:
    • If the error persists, pause the cycle and allow the foam to settle. You might need to manually remove some foam using a cup or cloth.
  5. Reset the machine:
    • Disconnect the power for a few minutes, then reconnect and try running a cycle.
  6. Check for sensor issues (rare):
    • If the error continues despite proper detergent usage and no visible excess foam, a qualified technician might need to check the foam sensor.

Additional Tips

  • Don't overload the machine: Overloading can trap more foam and exacerbate the issue.
  • Consider liquid detergent: Liquid detergents often produce less foam than powder detergents.
  • Consult your user manual: Refer to your specific model's manual for any additional troubleshooting advice or error code definitions.
